An epic battle, the greatest in pre-European Aotearoa New Zealand - aggrieved over what he saw as the unfair division of a fish harvest, Pikau-te-rangi of Ngati Toa-rangatira raised an army of 10,000 men. He led them against Te Rauangaanga, Te Wherowhero's father who rallied 3,000 men from Waikato and Ngati Maniapoto to defend their home territories against invasion. https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/1t88/te-wherowhero-potatau/print The Battle of Hingakaka is claimed to have been the largest battle ever fought in New Zealand. It may also have been one of the last great battles in world history that did not see significant usage of gunpowder firearms or other modern weapons. Essentially an intertribal conflict among the Maori, the details of Hingakaka are surprisingly well known, possibly due to the fact that regular contact with Europeans was just beginning around the time. Strangely, the exact date of the battle (or even year) is not known with certainty. The best estimate seems to have been around 1803. The Battle of Hingakaka seems to have accelerated the disunity of the Maori tribes and paved the way for the ensuing Musket Wars. One of the largest tribal conflicts ever recorded was the Battle of Hingakaka. Probably taking place around the year 1803, this war was ostensibly fought over fishing rights and harvest. Ngati Toa from the southern tip of the North Island decided to launch a punitive war against the Ngati Maniapoto tribe in what is now the Waikato region at the north end of the island. According to available accounts, the Ngati Toa chief Pikauterangi marshaled an army of perhaps more than ten thousand warriors for the campaign and marched north. However, the invaders were spotted before they had a chance to begin the slaughter. The Ngati Maniapoto and their allies hastily gathered a force of about sixteen hundred warriors to oppose the Ngati Toa. Having time to choose the ground of the battle, the defenders organized themselves on a high ridge just south of Lake Ngarato. The battle was a disaster for the invaders. At first the Ngati Toa seemed to gain the upper hand, surrounding some of the defending force. However, reinforcements for the northerners charged down the hill, breaking the encirlement and killing the Toa chief in the process. The confused southerners were forced to retreat, and the retreat became a rout. Many of the invaders were killed or captured as they attempted to flee into the nearby lake and swamps. The engagement came to be known as Hingakaka (the Fall of the Parrots) because so many tribal chieftains were killed during the fighting.

During a hurricane on Mauke, when many people perished, Paikea survived by clinging to some debris on which he was carried across to the island of Mangaia. His wife watched as he was washed away clinging to the debris. She waited and watched for his return from that cliff top until she died. She was buried there and her grave is marked and revered to this day. Paikea's survival of the hurricane was seen as a miracle. The event led to his name being changed from Kahutia Te Rangi to Paikea. Paikea is the name of a species of crab, well known as the only crab able to survive hurricanes by the tenacity with which it clings to debris, no matter how strong the wind. Paikea lived on Mangaia for some time before leaving, never to be heard of on those islands again. Some of his descendants still live on Mangaia. Paikea then appears in Aotearoa on the back of a whale. He left Rarotonga on a type of canoe called tohorā, one specially carved in the shape of a whale, hence its name tohorā, the word for whale. This is likely to be the origin of the legend that Paikea arrived in Aotearoa on the back of a whale.

Following its defeat at Rangiriri the Kīngitanga force fell back to a third defensive line centred on Pāterangi, between Te Awamutu and the Waipā River. Unable to be outflanked along the river, Pāterangi consisted of 2 km of trenches with critical junctions supported by redoubts. At its peak 2000 men from a dozen iwi were present at Pāterangi, the largest Māori mobilisation of the war. General Cameron had no intention of attacking this line. On 20 February 1864 a British force of 1200 men bypassed Pāterangi without alerting the lookouts. Next morning they attacked the agricultural centre of the district, Rangiaowhia. The Battle of Rangiriri was a major engagement in the invasion of Waikato, which took place on 20–21 November 1863 during the New Zealand Wars. More than 1400 British troops defeated about 500 warriors of the Kingitanga, which was resisting the expansion of British settlement and colonial rule in the North Island. Melanesia Australia Papua Solomon Vanuatu Fiji New Caledonia - Melanesia (4000 - 1200 BCE) In 40.000 BCE , Ancient Australoid (Sahulian) arrived in Sahul Continent (nowadays Australia & Papua) later spread toward surrounding islands of nowadays called, Bismarck, Solomon, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji. The Sahulians were ancient people migrated from Africa, have close relationship with Dravidian of Southern India, Sinhalese, Maldivians, Andamanese islander in Indian Ocean, Orang Asli in Malaya and Aeta of the Luzon. The last glacial period ended the Ice Age and the rise of sea level separated Papua and Australia and it surrounding islands. In 4000 BCE, Austronesian from surrounding maritime southeast Asia (moluccan alifuru and mindanao islander) arrived in coastal Papua. They intermixing with sahulian people in coastal Papua both genetically and culturally, developing a disticnt Melanesian culture. Melanesians adopted stone tools and austronesian language, as well as maritime skills. Melanesian seafarers spread toward islands of around Papua toward toward pacific ocean. In 1600 BCE, New wave of Austronesian, known as Lapita People arrived in northern Papua, and later spread toward islands of nowadays Bismarck Solomon, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji and deep in the uninhibited islands of Samoa and Tonga. Lapita voyagers brings the knowledge of obsidian stone as tools and distinct pottery pattern dented with shark teeth. Some Lapita people intermarried with existing Melanesians and became the ancestors of many coastal melanesian such as Kanak, Fijian and ni-vanuatu. THe rest of Lapita voyagers sailed deep into the pacific, settled in uninhabited island of Samoa and Tonga, Later spread toward islands in Polynesia.

The Chinese regarded the bird as Fenghuang (Phoenix) In 16th century, previously Germanic land-based Iberian kingdoms of Portugal, Castile and Aragon had transformed into maritime power with the knowledge gained from defeating Moorish Andalusians and Genoese expertise, rival of the Venetians. Portuguese manage to circumnavigate Africa after passing cape of Good Hope/Cabo da Boa Esperança and dominate spice trade in Indian ocean up to spice island in Moluccas, while Spaniards who took to the west found new continent of America and found its way to the Pacific ocean after passing Strait of Magellan/ Estrecho de Magallanes. Both Iberian powers eventually met in spice island of Moluccas. With Portuguese dominate spice trade in Indian ocean up to Japan while Spaniards dominate Atlantic ocean silver and slave trade in the America.

The Tuʻi Tonga Empire, or Tongan Empire, are descriptions sometimes given to Tongan expansionism and projected hegemony in eastern Melanesia to Western & southern Polynesia which began around 950 CE, reaching its peak during the period 1200–1500 CE It was centered in Tonga on the island of Tongatapu, with its first capital at Toloa, Heketā then later at Muʻa. Modern researchers and cultural experts attest to widespread Tongan influence, evidence of buildings, monuments as well as maritime trade and exchange of material and cultural artefacts from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Futuna to Rarotonga.
